Things I'd Like To Say 16 - Quick Big Mouth rant
While I did get a couple of laughs out of clips of this show; Big Mouth's flaws drown out its merits.
First of all, the animation looks like a more-inbred version of Bob's Burgers; a cartoon that is unfunny, unoriginal, and just plain boring. Seriously, couldn't they have paid someone from Newgrounds to draw and animate this shit. Someone such as...Oh, I know! Karri Esala. His style has good, solid animation; influenced by old cartoons; visually appealing; and distinctive. Hell, even Mr. Pickles had a distinct style despite not being the most appealing. Sure Big Mouth's better than Nina Paley or Joey Blanchette, but that isn't saying much. Second, I have no problem with violence and vulgarity in animation, but the creators of this were beaten to the punch by Fat Dime Studios, Dave Lovelace, and Dean Packis. The execution of this was show was middling, and there were plenty of missed opportunities. I mean, the Hormone Monsters could have added some extra depth, but the creators went the easy way out a la Drawn Together. There's no consistency to the aforementioned Hormone Monsters, and many of the other jokes don't hit. Third, the voice acting isn't very good. As in, the main characters sound too old for their age. A problem shared with Gravity Falls, which is also overrated. Would it not have killed those dipshits to get Cree Summer or James Arnold Taylor? They would have done a far better job. Hell, Jesse Hernandez can do better than the ear puke this show has. Fourth, the celebrity references were pointless and would have been better if they just stuck with the Hormone Monsters. All in all, this show tries to be as surreal, wacky, and obscene as Rats on Cocaine, the works of Karri Esala, and even Netflix' Bojack Horseman, but falls flat.
