Yep, I wanted to cover this for a while now, and it is time. For those who are profoundly and obstinately ignorant, Louisiana’s wetlands are eroding four times faster than normal. However, it would be extremely simplistic to blame climate change, the resource extraction industry, or whatever. The real culprit is not what you think it is: The US Army Corps of Engineers. Contrary to nimrods such as Bob Marshall, Lamar White, Jr, Robert Mann, The Council for a Better Louisiana, The Coastal Restoration Authority*, and so on, Louisiana’s coastal erosion problem was rooted in government failure. A little history lesson: In 1965, Hurricane Betsy hit Louisiana and resulted in a shit-ton of flooding. The Johnson administration passed the Flood Control Act of 1965 and decided to have the USACE build levees on the banks of the Mississippi river, regardless of any unintended consequences. Gee, I wonder what those unintended consequences were? Oh, I know! Dumping silt deposits into the Gulf of Mexico, causing the wetlands to erode four times faster than normal; lulling people into a false sense of security, which resulted in them developing in low lying areas; usage of unsuitable soil and poor design, that resulted in NO getting flooded; and don’t get me started on the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. For those who think that the USACE can be reformed or what have you: that is wishful thinking at best, and delusional self-deceit at worst. It needs to be shut down completely, and don’t give me “but who will provide flood protection and coastal restoration?” crap either. Why? There are individuals outside the public sector who can do it far better for far cheaper. As for the little peckers who use the tired “climate skeptics are funded by the oil and coal industries” attack. Here’s looking at you getting openly mocked and forever discredited.
