The first instalment of City Impressions takes place in Mayflower Park, Southampton.
It is a Sunday afternoon in early autumn. I'm sitting right by the waterside, look out to a rotten, broken dock. About 200 meters to my right, there is a giant cruise ship almost ready to depart. A little less than that distance in the same direction, there is an ice cream van, and a fair number of people are flocking around it, treating their children to a cone. Somewhere to my right, announcements are made over a loudspeaker; I suspect they have to do with the cruise ship.
In the corner I'm sitting, there is barely anyone in a 50 metre radius. To my left, 2 people look out from behind a fence and have a quiet chat. The ferry from the Isle of Wight arrives, a plane flies over. The nearby road carries a few louder vehicles every now and then.
Soft waves crash against the dock, and seagulls make their presence known.
